Q.

Lactose intolerance

My 2 year old daugther does have a constant runny nose  winter and summer. Her eyes is always watery, it looks like she is crying all the time. She does have sometimes very pianful cramps on her tummy. She did suffer as a baby with cramps on her tummy and the doctor did suggest that we do change her milk to a soy based milk. After changing her milk the cramps were still there. It sounds like she is having the cramps just before she is farting. She also has every day a runny tummy, like diarrhoea, and smelly. We did take all dairy products away from her and the runny tummy change to very soft. We have done it now for about a week and all the sudden her runny, diarrhoea, tummy is back.
What I want to know, is this a sympton of lactose intolerance, and what can we do to help her? She is still on nappies and we can not potty train her with her tummy being runny all the time. I do want to know if there is anything else I can do before taking her to a doctor for tests?

Thank you.

It is very difficult for me to be sure about the cause of your daughter's symptoms. She does seem to improve off milk and dairy which probably indicates that she is lactose intolerant. You must keep her off ALL DAIRY products not just milk itself. This means no yoghurt or anything made of dairy products. See if she improves on a very strict non-dairy diet. If she does not she will need to be seen by a paediatrician.
