Childhood Diseases

My sister had a healthy baby girl on the morning of Saturday 14-03-2009, unfortunately the baby has developed Jaundice and the mother may be discharged - not the baby.

Due to the poor working conditions and incompetent staff of this particular private hospital in JHB, we would like to have the baby discharged.

I' ve heard that the lights required can be rented from Dis-Chem pharmacies? Would it be a good idea to take the baby home and care for her properly at home?

No you cannot safely use the lights at home. The baby's eyes must be protected and the baby's bilirubin levels have to be tested. The lights have to have a particular wavelength to be effective and safe.

Thank you, for your advice, but we could not let a new born baby be treated like a piece of dead poultry in a private hospital where we pay extremely large amounts of money for little to no service - we managed to find a Sister and Qualified Midwife who rents these lights and does the blood tests - with a smile and wonderful service and advice that actually makes sense! (The first friendly face we' ve encountered since this ' happy'  event).
