Q.

Itchy Scalp

Hi Doctor,

My 3 year old is constantly scratching his head. I have looked for fleas but could not find anything. He has small scabs at the top of his head, which could be from his nails. He does get bitten by mosquitos whilst playing in the sandpit at creche, as he has bites on his arms, behind his ears and at the back of his neck, by the hairline.

Could it be mosquitos or shampoo or lice? I dunno....

Thanks.

There are at least two possibilities here. The first one is indeed head lice as the cause of your son's scalp itch and rash. The other is a scalp infection due to a fungus which is called Tinea. It would be best to ask your doctor or nearest clinic nurse to see your son and to make a diagnosis before advising about treatment.
