Itchy Head

Dear Doc

My daughter of 9 has been complaining of an itchy head. My first thought was lice, but of thorough examination it definitely is not lice, nor ecsema or not even inflamed. I have been treating her head with conditioners, but even this does not work. I have had her at my hair stylist and she also does not see anything wrong with my daughter. In the December holidays, my daughter had been swimming quite a lot and I treated her scalp with conditioner each time after she swam, but even now it still remains itchy. Do you think I should take her to a dermatologist? She is very embarrassed about this, as kids tend to mock her.
Thank you

This is an excellent question and you have certainly done everything correctly so far. Of course head lice would be the first thing to exclude in a young child.Stress is the most common cause in adults but this is probably unlikely. Other possible causes are fungal infections and certain skin conditions such as psoriasis or eczema.Although nothing is obvious here it would be best to take your daughter to see a dermatologist.
