Is this normal

My daughter is 6 years old. Yesterday I noticed that she was punching her chest. She said that she was playing and that by doing it she could feel her heart was beating faster. She also said that afterwards she takes a couple of deep breaths which makes her heart beat more slowly.

It just sounds a bit scarry and was wondering if it is dangerous at all what she' s doing.

Your daughter has worked out that if she holds her breath her heart rate slows slightly. She is very clever and observant. The only hesitation I have before saying that this is completely normal and physiological is certain conditions can cause an significant fall in the heart rate while holding one's breath. This includes a condition where fluid accumulates in the pericardium which is the membrane surrounding the heart.I also wonder why she is punching her chest.Does she have a feeling of discomfort in her chest? I suggest that you ask your paediatrician to see her.
