Q.

Is snoring a symptom of something?

Hi Professor,

My 1 year 8 month old snores really loudly. He is healthy and does not have a blocked nose, it just seems that he sleeps with his mouth open and this causes him to snore. It is definitely hereditary as his father snores loudly too!

Should I be concerned?

Obviously young children should not snore. If they do snore the cause is usually a very blocked nose caused by enlarged adenoids.Snoring can be dangerous in that it is often accompanied by a condition called sleep apnoea in children where they may stop breathing for a few seconds at a time. It would be best to ask an ENT specialist to see your son.
