Irritating cough

Hi dr
My 16 month old daughter''s daymother advised that she regularly has a dry irritating cough when she sleeps at lunch time. However, she never coughs at home, which I think rules out asthma (I am however asthmatic &  had bronchial asthma as a child). Which makes me wonder if it''s possibly an allergy of some sort for something at the creche? What do you think &  what can I give her for it?
Much appreciated as always.

You are correct children with asthma usually cough at night, but the fact that your little daughter's cough is dry and irritating makes it possible that this is indeed an asthma cough. It is certainly possible that something at the creche is causing her to cough like this especially a cat or if the children are being given a fruit juice containing a sulphite preservative for example. This cough responds well to a single puff of Ventolin or Asthavent given through an infact spacer with face mask.
