Q.

Iron Deficiency - 5 year old

Dear Pead

My son is now 5 and in Grade R - his teacher is worried that he appears very tired/listless during the day. He needs persuasion to finish his food at meal times. He goes to bed 7:30 - 8:00 every night and sleeps really well. I am concerned as he is really pale and has bouts of irritability during the day. I am anemic and have been on iron supplements since a young age. Could I have him tested at a pharmacy or should a I see his Pediatrician? He is taking multivitamins every day but this doesn''t contain any iron.
Thank you.

Sorry for taking so long to reply to your question. There appears to have been a glitch. Your son could well be anaemic and in particular have an iron deficiency anaemia. He should be seen by a paediatrician.
