Q.

Insulin Resistance

Hi,
My son is 7 years old and has been picking up weight from the age of 3 years. We are trying to eat helthy and he is very active but he doesn''t lose weight. We had a blood test done last year and his Glucose is normal but his Insuline is above the limit. Can he have Insuline Resistance, and if so is there any medication that he can use ?

Thanks

Your son has a normal blood sugar but high insulin levels. He has also gained too much weight despite your best efforts at giving him a good diet. This could well be in the early stages of insulin resistance where insulin does not have its normal hormonal effects on glucose and fats in the body. There is a medicine called metformin available but is not usually recommended without a very good reason in children. A strict diet is regarded as the best prevention against the onset of diabetes. It would be best to have your son seen by a paediatric endocrinologist. There are experts in all the main centres in SA.
