Infant reflux

Dear Prof,

My 5 week old breastfed son has light reflux, he doesn''t vomit a lot, but it bothers him very much. My GP prescribed Gaviscon advanced 2.5ml two times a day, but it made him very constipated. We dropped the dosage to 1 ml two times/day but it doesn''t seem to be enough as the reflux stil bothers him at times and the constipation doesn''t go away completely either. Is there any other treatments we can use for the reflux while breastfeeding (we really whant to keep my son on breastmilk for as long as possible) which wil not cause constipation? He is due for his 6 week checkup next week, but a week can get very long.

Your baby son's reflux seems to be severe enough to need more effective treatment than Gaviscon. In any case he is not tolerating the Gaviscon well. He will certainly be able to stay on breastmilk but his paediatrician will need to introduce at least one anti-reflux medicine as soon as possible. It may be necessay to add a second treatment as well depending on his response.
