Q.

Breastmilk continues to provide nutrients and antibodies to babies past a year, however, as solids make up the main nutritional source for babies, the milk is in addition to what they receive from their food. The World Health Organisation does recommend that babies are breastfed for at least two years, and the American Academy of Pediatrics has recently changed their stance from one year to two years in line with this. Your risk of breast and ovarian cancer is also reduced the longer you breastfed. Babies breastfed past a year will continue to benefit from all the antibodies so won''t get sick very often, and if they do will recover quite fast. As toddlers begin separating from their parents and sharing toys and so on, the antibody boosts from the breastmilk is great - and at this age, the milk is higher in fat and is more concentrated with antibodies, so is specially beneficial. If baby gets a runny tummy, they will be able to continue to have breastmilk but would need to be taken off formula or cows milk or first growth milk (which is just a pre-prepared formula) as the dairy would upset their tummy further and could cause dehydration, and although a breastfed baby can still get dehydrated, it doesn''t happen as quickly and they do tend to recover quite fast.

After a year, when babies breastfeed, it isn''t for long feeds like they do before a year. They tend to just feed here and there during the day when they are going off to sleep or want some comfort or if they are thirsty or if they have hurt themselves, and then of course at night, this is the quickest and easiest way to settle baby off to sleep again so that you all get some sleep.

If you do wean her, having milk in a cup is not that important, you could give her yoghurt and cheese to eat, and you can add milk to her porridge and cereal and mashed potato so that she still gets the benefits that dairy offers. Moms who continue to breastfeed give their children yoghurt and cheese and cows milk in these ways too.

My pediater het gesê  my dogtertjie moet so 200ml melk na 12 maande op n dag inkry.....

Sterkte.
