head injury

Hi doctor,my 7year old son was riding his bicycle in the yard and rode into a wooden pole knocking his head pretty hard. He has a bruise and slight swelling at the top of his left temple. There was no loss of conciousness,he was just stunned and very pale and started sweating profusely. We gave him Stilpayne he was also complaining he was tired for around 30mins but we did not let him sleep after that he has been playing normally and running around.Do we have anything to worry about and is it neccessary to see a doctor?

At this stage probably not but it does seem that your son was concussed by this head injury. He should not be too active at this stage [48hours]. Watch out for any signs of drowsiness, confusion, dizziness, vomiting or food refusal and if any of these occur he must see a doctor immediately. Please do not give him Stopayne as it contains ingredients especially codeine that may cause drowsiness and only confuse the picture.

It would have been better not to have given him any medicine, but rather let him sleep. The worry is if you can''t wake him, not if he sleeps. Sleep helps with healing. Keep an eye on him during the night and if he vomits or you can''t rouse him then it''s best to take him to see a doctor. You should probably take him to the doctor in the morning regardless.
