Hair pulling

My 2 year old daughter has terrible habit of pulling her hair out when falling asleep. I have noticed that she now does this when she is disciplined as well.

Is there anything I can do to stop this as she is developing bald spots on the front of her head.

I m also 23 weeks pregnant currently and have put this down to her being insecure about the baby''s impending arrival. Although the hair pulling started before we found out the pregnancy. the pregnancy seems to have made the situation a bit worse then what it used to be.

Your advise and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I will try just about anything, as long as it does not hurt my little one.

This habit is not all that uncommon and in most cases has a strong psychological cause.Your pregnancy may be a factor now. This habit of pulling out the hair is given a long name 'trichotillomania' It is a habit tic and is difficult to stop. Try not to draw her attention to her pulling on her hair. Cut her hair short or pull it back so that she cannot pull on her hair easily. Use a gentle baby shampoo on her hair. Draw her attention away from her hair when you see she is about to pull on her hair. This often a passing phase and it affects the terrible twos quite often. She is probably still too young to see a psychologist at this stage but if she persists with this habit into her third year she should then see a psychologist.
