Hello Doc!

My 3 year old had grommets put in in May last year, so it has been a year and a half.
The last couple of times we went to the doctor I always ask them if they can see it, and they normally say they cannot see it, but apperently they cannot say with certainty that it is not there.

So, is it possible that the grommets are still in her ear drums?
I ask because we are going to spend a lot of time swimming this holiday, and do not want to fuss about her ear plugs every time!

Thank you so much!

You are welcome. The usual grommets that are put into childrn's ears pop out by themselves after about 3 months. As long as your son did not have the so-called 'longer term' grommets inserted in May 2010, his grommets should have popped out long ago. Grommets are usually quite easily seen so if the doctors cannot see them they are probably out.It should be fine for him to swim during the holidays.

My daughter''s one grommet eventually had to be removed in theatre because it didn''t fall out by itself. If in doubt get an ENT to check.

Hi Zee,

My son had blue grommets put in and the ENT doctor showed us them with the camera. I think they should be very visible.

I had grommets myself when I was 7 years old... one of them only came out after more than 3 5 years....
