Q.

Grommets

Morning doctor

Hope you are doing well.

My son is in hospital every 2 months with ear infection. According to our paed his ears doesn’ t drain the fluid (vog). Her reason for this, believe it or not, was teething. She said we must wait till he is 2 years old to see if the problem persists. He is now 16 months.

He was hospitalized last week with a lung virus and – infection. We got a specialist to check his ears and he suggested grommets. We followed his advice and had it done last week Wednesday. I did it for the reason that I’ m afraid that it might affect his speech, because he cant hear properly. Since the grommets my son speaks louder than usual, but seems more happy and is also sleeping much much better. Is this normal doctor?

Please tell me, will the grommets affect his health for the better? Will this solve the ear infection problem once and for all. The specialist told us so, but I would like to get your opinion on this as well.

Thank you doctor.

Thank you.You have done a very wise thing and your son will be much better now that the grommets have been put in. The fluid will drain out from his middle ears and he will be able to hear well again. The grommets will fall out by themselves after about 3 months. In the meantime make sure that your son's nose is kept nice and clear by using Salex [saline] nose drops at night.
