Hallo dr, my 13 month old son received grommets two weeks ago. There is at times brown mucous like stuff that comes out of the ear. No fever at all. He is buzy with third bottle of Exocin. Can you please advise me why this happens. Thank you dr.

You are welcome. The discharge you see is fluid which is draining through the grommets. Just gently dry your baby's ear with an ear bud.Do not push the ear bud into his ear, just keep it at the opening. Mop up the fluid twice a day. It should dry up after a few days.

The stuff coming out is what would previously have been stuck in there and caused hearing loss and infection. Now, because the grommet is in, the fluid is able to come out.

With my sons grommets we had a bit of fluid come out the day or two after the ops, and then whenever he had a cold. However, our fluid wasn' t brown. I have seen friends children with brown fluid though, so I think that is pretty normal.
