Q.

Glucophage whilst breastfeeding

Dear Paediatrician

When I was trying to conceive my second baby I was put on glucophage/metformin for insulin resistance and when I fell pregnant I stayed on the meds for 12 weeks.

My little one is 9 months old and I want to go back to taking the meds. I breast feed her as much as I can although my supply is not that great and she takes formula as well. Is it safe for me to do so?

Thanking you in advance for your guidance.

You are welcome.Glucophage is not recommended while breastfeeding your baby as small amounts pass into your breastmilk and may affect your baby.If you want to restart the glucophage you will have to stop breastfeeding.
