The symptoms of german measles (Rubella) are often only mild flu like symptoms, but sometimes marked joint pain is present especially in older people. The rash usually starts in the face and then spreads over the trunk and limbs. It disappears within 2-3days, but lymphnodes are often prominently enlarged.
Children are usually contagious from the onset of the flu like symptoms until after the disappearance of the rash. If infected it takes 14-21 days before symptoms appear. (the incubation period). Vaccination as MMR or seperate Rubella vaccine protects against german measles and is especially important in all girls and women of child bearing age that do not have proven anti-bodies.
