Q.

frequent coughs in baby

Perhaps due to a weakness from his asthmatic smoker mother or perhaps due to daycare infection, my grandson of 7 months frequently has nasty sounding coughs which obviously make him miserable. He has to use a nebuliser. I don' t want to interfere in any way at all, but please set my mind at rest. None of my chidren ever had coughs as babies, not even in nursery school, so I am really worried about this little one.Apart from this he is healthy and developing perfectly.

What a pleasure to read such a well written question. As always, what is required for your baby grandson is a proper diagnosis.Does he have asthma or is his cough due to recurrent infection with the added irritation from cigarette smoke? He sould be seen by a paediatrician and the necessary tests should be done to make a firm diagnosis.Only then can the correct treatment be advised.
