Hi there

My 4 year old son started creche this year. At first he was fine and for the past couple of weeks he has a cough. THe cough starts and after a while it goes away and maybe after a day or 3 the cough is back and seems to be bad at night.
He has been to the doctor twice, first he was given cough syrup, and the second time he was given an antibiotic, which seems to have helped, but the cough is back. I have also bought him Dilinct junior and he has already finished a bottle of that. What can I do?

There is an epidemic of whooping cough this year and many children have been affected by this illness. The fact that your son's cough does not respond to cough mixtures and to other treatment makes it likely that this is the cause of his cough. This is a very difficult cough to treat and it can continue for as long as 3 months. The problem is that the diagnosis was not made early when it helps to give the correct antibiotic and possibly a short course of a mild cortisone as well. If the diagnosis is made later than 2 weeks after the cough starts it is too late to give this treatment. You can go back to your doctor and ask if it is still possible to treat your son's whooping cough.
