Formula and gas

Started my baby(now 7 weeks) on S26 and was hungry all the time also terrible cramps - nurse/paed then recommended novalac ar digest as they said it could either be hungry baby or all symptoms caused by sensitive stomach/ silent reflux. Was on this for five days - cried and cramped terribly for first two days..all got better and even slept great for two nights...but noiticed baby very uncomfortable early morning (from 4 onwards) also one good two bad nights waking every very very bad smelling runny stools..lots of farting very smelly and red around anus...paed now recommended i change either to similac alimentum or pepticate...they say this all due to allergy to protein in milk perhaps.. what is your thoughts..we (parents) both had ecsema as children but no food allergies. I am just weary to go to such an expensive specialisedformule if it is not entirely necessary?

There are two possible reasons for your baby's symptoms, either a cow's milk allergy or a lactose intolerance problem. As a start try NAN HA first. If your baby's symptoms persist then you will need to change to a lactose free formula such as NAN LF or failing that to a soya formula.
