Q.

Formula

Hi Doc

My baby is on Novalac AR. The formula is working well for the reflux problem but it is constipating her. Can I mix Novalac AR and Novalac IT (for constipation) in one bottle?? Half and half?? Would this help?

Have also heard I can use sweet oil in her bottles. Is this good? What else can I use for her constipation...something natural please.

Novalac AR is an anti-reflux formula which is thicker than usual and is helping your baby, but at the cost of causing her to be constipated. You cannot mix Novalac IT with the AR and nor should you add sweet oil to the formula. The only solution will be to go off the Novalac AR and just use the regular Novalac formula.Your baby will require the usual treatment for reflux starting with an acid reducer such as Losec. You should speak to your paediatrician.

How old is your baby? You can use a bit of olive oil (1ml) or you can use a 1/3 of a tsp of brown sugar, if that all fails you can get glycerine suppositories
