It will help to make sure that his nose is completely clear when he flies so use Salex nose drops for 2 or 3 days before you need to fly and just before you board the plane. Make sure that he is sucking on something preferably drinking from a bottle from the time that the pilot informs you that the plane is about to descend.

If he sucks a dummy, give this to him on take off and especially on landing - about ten minutes before landing is best as this is when the pain starts - and you''ll hear all the babies and toddlers start to cry.
If he doesn''t have a dummy, its time for a lolly pop or a chewy sweet such as a small packet of jelly babies.
Teh chewing and sucking helps the ears unblock and reduces the pain.
You should try chewing gum.

IF he has a cold, then use a nasal spray such as illiadan just before boarding the plan and again about an hour before you will be landing.

If your child really suffers badly from the pain, use some calpol to ease the pain but still give him the bag of jely babies or a dummy to try to help.
