Q.

Fluoxetine and birth complications

Dear Doc

During my previous pregnancy I was on 40 mg fluoxetine and my baby very briefly stopped breathing a minute or so after he was born by C-section. He did not need resusitation and was ok afterwards. It was a scary experience though. I am now on 10 mg fluoxetine, and afraid this might happen again. What is the likelyhood?

Thank you in advance.

There is surprisingly little information on the effects of fluoxetine on the infant during the birth process itself. You have reduced the dose of this medicine but it is possible that it may still have an effect on your new baby. Please inform the anaesthetist as well as the paediatrician before you have the Caesarean section.
