Childhood Diseases

Hi Professor,

My 9 month old has a cold AGAIN. I am using Chamiflor for his nose twice a day and wanted to try Flemeze as it works for my 3 year old. Can I give it to my 9 month old - 2.5ml three times a day? I have found that Mucospect does not work. He has a cough and a runny nose.

The whole family actually suffers from a mucous problem and when we go away, the problem disappears. I personally think it is pollution as we live near the Sappi paper mill and a steel manufacturing factory. There is a terrific stench emitted from these factories and it is uncontrolled. Is there somewhere where we can go for allergy testing?

Thank you always for being at the other end of the keyboard!

This is a good question and it is certainly possible that your family is reacting to some form of air pollution. The most likely pollutant is sulphur dioxide which can cause respiratory symptoms. Mucospect and Flemeze are the same medicine but in any case I would not give this to a 9 month old baby. There is an allergy clinic in Alberton at the Clinton Hospital.
