Fever and sore abdomen area

Hi Doc

My daughter is turning 4 in January. She has been fine during the last 2 " days" . Her appetite has not been wonderful, but she has been eating with some encouragement from me. The past 2 " nights"  have been concerning though. On Saturday night I noticed that she was not herself just before bedtime - I then established that she had a fever of 38.5 and she then complained of a pain in the abdomen area. I gave her 5ml of Nurofen which brought the fever down. Yesderday she did not complain of any pain. However at 1:30am this morning she woke up with a fever, and again complained of a pain. I gave her Nurofen again. This morning she is not complaining of pain anymore.

Should I be concerned about the pain that she says that she gets? I know that young children tend to say that their tummy is sore when they are not feeling well, but considering that she gets a high temperature should I be extra cautious and take her for an examination? The strange thing is that the fever strikes at night?

Thank you

When girls of your daughter's age have a high fever and complain of abdominal pain, it is very important to make sure that she does not have a urinary system infection,or another reason for the fever such as appendicitis or a condition known as mesenteric adenitis. It is important that your daughter is seen by a doctor.
