There may be several possible causes for your son's symptoms that you mention here. He is a bit young but he may have a condition called 'Acute Nephritis' which is due to an inflammation of the kidneys where there is blood in the urine and a raised blood pressure. This illness usually follows on to a strep throat infection or a skin infection. It is the raised blood pressure that causes the headache. Another possible illness is one called Henoch-Schonlein Purpura but this illness usually starts off with a very noticeable rash on the lower back, buttocks and thighs.Another possible illness is Bilharzia but this would be most unlikely unless he has been swimming in a river recentlly especially certain rivers on the northern parts of our east coast or Mozambique. It is very important that your doctor makes a definite diagnosis here and especially that he/she measures your son's blood pressure. Please take him back to your doctor or to an after hours paediatric clinic where he can be seen and diagnosed.
