Q.

Fever

Dear Doc

My 10 month old baby started with a running nose on Friday. On Friday evening, her eyes became very puffy and the area around her eyes were extremely red. This has since imporoved - the puffiness is gone and the redness has subsided quite a bit. I have been giving her Demazin syrup for her runny nose - which now seems to be getting under control.

On Saturday and Sunday (and this morning) she has had a fever - I have been giving her Calpol syrup for that, and giving her cool baths. Is there anything more (better) that I could be doing to help her?

She is currently teething.

She drank very little yesterday, but did eat her fruit and veggies reasonably ok. She is not vomiting and there is no diarrhea.

I' ve also noticed that when I take her temperature, the readings tend to differ by on average 1/2 degree (sometimes a bit more), depending on which ear I use for taking a reading. Why is this the case?

Many thanks
Sandra

Your baby seems to have a bad cold which as you are aware is caused by a virus and usually lasts about 5 days or so. She does not appear to distressed and is eating quite well, but not drinking so well. Keep her nose clear with Salex nose drops used twice a day and continue with the Calpol for fever.
The slight variation in temperature taken in her ear canals is probably technical and could be due to how the earpiece is inserted into the ear canals each side when her temperature is taken.
