Fall - When to panic!!!

Hi Dr
My 13 month old baby fell off the bed!!! I turned my back for a second and I heard the bang and then the scream. I was cleaning at the other end of the room so I did not see the fall as he went over the other edge of the bed. I feel absolutely terrible. It was his first big fall. I tried to keep him awake as long as possible but he fell around his nap time so he was tired and wanted to sleep. Since falling he has crawled normally, ate a small piece of fruit (he is a terrible eater) and I read to him and he pointed to pictures he knows the " baby words"  to. I have felt his head for any bumps or swelling and I have checked his limbs for any bruising or lumps and bumps. All seems well but I feel sick with worry.
I know I need to keep monitoring him for vomitting and drowsiness but for how long (hours?) should I be monitoring him. I have a function to attend tonight and granny will be watching him so I am just a little nervous.
Thanks again for your advise Dr!

This kind of fall is very common with babies, but parents are right to be concerned. The signs to look out for are drowsiness, vomiting and food refusal. You need to watch for these for at least 48 hours after the fall. Your baby does seem to be fine and fortunately has suffered no obvious consequences from his fall.
