Hi Professor,

Hope you had a good weekend.

My 2 year old son fell out of our car yesterday. We drive a Toyota Quantum, like a taxi, so the fall was about 1m. He fell straight onto his head, his arms did not break his fall. He was in the driver''s seat, opened the door and fell right out onto the driveway. He had a bump yesterday, I put ice onto it. There is no bump today. He cried for about 30 seconds and then continued playing. His pupils shrink when I shine a torch near them and there is no vomiting. He eats and drinks well and had a good night''s sleep.

Should I be worried and what other symptoms should I watch for?

Thank you for your advice.

This is indeed quite a fall and is of concern. The main concern is possible concussion, possible skull fracture or any bleeding inside the skull. Please watch for signs of drowsiness, vomiting, irritability and food refusal. If you become the slightest bit concerned about any of your son's symptoms take him to be seen by a doctor.

The lump is sore, so I hope it gets better within the next day or 2. Looks awful. He had ITP (a blood disease which resembles leukemia) when he was 18 monhts old, so I am a bit more weary that usual about lumps and things. Luckily this looks only like an infected lymph node. Thanks for asking.

This same boy had a horrible fall on rocks a year ago, with concussion, a CT scan and 8 stitches later. So I know how that horror feels when you see it happen, even if the kiddie is ok!

Hi Racoon,

Thanks for your kind words.

Yes, I nearly died as I had to watch it happen, I was at the front of the car and it happened so fast. Our driveway is made of bricks, so it was a very hard fall, but he bounced back so quickly, I was thankful. I just need a whiskey to recover!!

How is your child''s lump?
