Q.

Eye Infection and Spitting up

Hi,

My baby boy is almost 3 weeks old and from the day he was born he had a sticky eye. It has a green/yellow discharge. The paed discharged him saying that it''s probably a blocked tear duct that will go away. It still has not got any better, the clinic told me to put some breast milk, which I have been doing for the last 2 weeks, it does clear for a little while but then it''s back to normal. The pharmacist says the baby is too young to give anything and I must continue to use boiled cooled water and cotton wool on his eyes. I''m so tired of seeing his eye like this, what are mu options??

Also, whenever he drinks from he and I burp him he always spits his milk up and then it worries me because he won''t get enough milk. Is it normal for babies to spit up almost every feed?

Many thanks for your forum.

Your baby has an eye infection as well as a blocked tear duct. Add a quarter of a teaspoonful of salt to a cupful of boiled and cooled water and wipe his eye twice a day with this solution. Also gently massage in the corner of his eye with your small finger to try to get the tear duct to open. If your baby burps up a little milk with a wind when you burp him this is quite normal.
