Q.

Eye infection

Dear Prof

My 2.5 year old has had a red and swollen eye since yesterday. This morning the eye was swollen almost shut, but no crustiness. I started treating him with Tobrex yesterday, but I''m not sure if its the right thing to do. The other seems unaffected. His 11 months old brother also has slight eye infection, but with crustiness and both eye affected. I am also treating him. What is the right thing to do? could it be pink eye??

many thanks!

I am always concerned when a child only has one eye infected and swollen like your son seems to have now. While he may simply have the very common red eye infection, there is not usually this much swelling. It is essential to see a doctor urgently as there is a very dangerous condition that needs to be ruled out namely periorbital cellulitis.
