There are several serious eye diseases which fortunately are rare in children. I presume that your carer's son has a serious infection as he would not normally be admitted to hospital. The most serious virus infections of the eye are caused by the herpes virus and another virus called the adenovirus. Bacterial infections with staphylococcus and chlamydia can also cause severe eye infections in children.
