Q.

expressed milk going sour after 24 hours

Hi,
A few months ago a lady posted on here and the breast feeding peer forum. I have posted this there, but as she also posted here, so I thought I''d post this info here in case she checks here again. Its something pretty rare, but not unheard of.

I happened to be looking something up on Kellymom about expressed milk when I came across a note that some women complain that their milk goes off really quickly after expressing.

It says that some women its just a soapy smell and some women it smells definitely off.

They said its caused by an excess of the enzyme lipase. If your milk does go off so quickly and you have ruled out storage problems and temperature problems with the fridge, it suggests flash heating the milk prevent this happening (this is a bit like home pasteurising the milk). You put the milk in a glass container such as a baby food jar or jam jar and stand this in a pot of rapidly boiling water (the water level must be higher than the milk level). You only have to do this for a short time - about 15 seconds or so.

Hope that helps.
