Q.

Dry Cough

My 4-year old son has a horrible, dry cough. I know it takes a while for a cough to clear up, but I was wondering if I can give him anything to ease the irritation in his throut. I gave Prospan and eventually Pholtex Junior but it did not help. He only settled at 3am so if there is something I can do so that he can sleep better tonight. Thanks

Paediatrician

The cough you describe here is typical of asthma in young children. Also typical of asthma is that this cough does not respond to treatment with cough mixtures. Your son should be seen by his paediatrician and if he has asthma he will be started on the correct treatment.

A teaspoon of honey before bed time will also help to ease the cough while he is sleeping.
