Doctor, please help me out here

Morning doctor

Hope you are doing well today.

My son (16 months 1 week) wasn’ t himself this weekend, so I thought it might have been the heat. Further everything else was fine –  sleeping, stools, eating, drinking and playing, but still I thought he didn’ t look 100% to me.

He has a runny nose for a week now and drooling, so I thought it was due to teething (he is busy with the top 2nd tooth from the back), but last night he started coughing. Dry and wet alternatively. This morning he didn’ t want to eat at all, but is taking in fluids. His tempreture this morning was 36.7.

Currently we are nubilising him with Duolin and Pulmicort which I think helps a lot. I have Duro Tuss for the coughing. I checked him all weekend and he has no fever (ranges between 35.7 –  36.9). Should I take him to the paed? I just get the chills when I think of the hospital AGAIN. He was in hospital at the beginning of the month for a lung virus and lung infection. What could be the reason for these symptoms? He had his MMR vaccine on 19 November which was three weeks late, because he was so sick and in hospital. We had grommets inserted at the beginning of the month as well.

Thank you doctor and sorry for the long post.

It seems that your little son has again caught a virus, possibly the same one if he again has an RS virus infection. It starts off with symptoms like a cold and then soon involves the chest causing an illness called bronchiolitis. Is your son at a creche? You do realise that the Pulmicort is a cortisone solution for nebulisers and is not used for bronchiolitis. Durotuss contains pseudoephedrine and a codeine derivative which are both no longer recommended for children under 2 years of age. This viral illness usually takes between 5 and 10 days to resolve and provided that your son can sleep normally, is not obviously short of breath and can feed normally he should get over the illness by himself. You must keep his nose clear with Salex nose drops at least twice day and you can nebulise him with the Duolin twice day if he is coughing or wheezing [chest making a whistling sound]
