Q.

Dizziness

Dear Doc

My apparently very healthy 9y old is complaining of feeling dizzy a lot in the last two days. He was sick with a mild viral illness 3 weeks ago, but has been in perfect health since then. He is eating playing etc he just keeps telling me the room feels like it is spinning and like he wants to fall over.

Do you think this is related to the recent viral illness? Do you have any suggestions on what it may be and how I could treat it.

Thank you as always

The most likely cause of your son's dizziness is a viral infection of his inner ear. This is the part of the ear that is responsible for balance and hearing. This infection is also known as 'labyrnthitis' It usually gets better without any treatment taking from 1 to 6 weeks to clear up.
