Hi Professor,

I wrote to you last week about my 1 year old having diarrhoea. It will be one week tomorrow and his stools are still watery. I have stopped all diary products and he drinks about 1.5lt daily of Hydrol. He eats oats porridge, jelly, toast and marg and pasta during the day.

Is there something else I can give him for the diarrhoea? I do not think he is dehydrated, I am just worried about the diarrhoea going on for so long.

Thank you.

Your baby son's diarrhoea is indeed going on too long. Sometimes babies develop a temporary lactose intolerance which causes diarrhoea to persist like this. However your baby has been off all dairy products yet his diarrhoea persists. So there must be another reason. He should be seen again by his doctor as he may need to have additional treatment which is usually given for babies with ongoing diarrhoea like this. The problem is there is a long weekend coming up and it may be difficult to get an appointment.
