Q.

Diarreah for 7 days already

Hi doc,

My daughter is 28 months old. She has had a very runny tummy since last week Wednesday already, and it is still going on. There is no fever or vomitting at all, just a very runny pale yellow stool several times a day.

We keep her very well hydrated and she her appetite has not been affected either. At what point should I start worrying as I believe a tummy bug shouldnt last more than a few days? Yesterday was a week already. Should I be concerned or just continue keeping her hydrated and hope it passes soon?

You are quite correct, most gastro infections are due to a viral infections and only last for a few days. It is unusual for diarrhoea to persist as it has with your little girl.It would be best to ask your doctor to see her. A stool sample should be sent to the laboratory to find out if she still has an infection.

Perhaps cut down on the amount of fruit she is eating and give water instead of any fruit juices she is drinking.

If you have already done so, probably best to see doctor to find out why its going on for so long.
