DEVELOPMENTAL DYSPLASIA OF THE HIP

I have developmental dysplasia when I was a child. When my daughter was born, we went to a doctor that specializes in this type of problems, just to check her out and make sure she doesn't have the same problem. He did x-rays at 6 weeks and 12 weeks and he concluded that she doesn't have the same problem. The past few weeks (she is now 15 months) I have notices that she has an extra fold in her upper thigh on the one leg. I know this is a symptom of dysplasia of the hip with newborns since I did research before she was born. I'm now worried that she has maybe the same problem now? I'm not sure what to do? Is it normal in toddlers to have the extra skin fold in the upper thigh? She is walking very stable, I can't notice any other trouble.

An extra fold in the upper thigh is not absolutely diagnostic of congenital hip dysplasia but raises the level of suspicion-especially with your history. It is not necessary to perform X-rays all the time to make the diagnosis as an ultrasound of the hips is all that is required in the first instance. I would suggest that this test be done on your baby.

Sorry for posting agian, but I keep on remembering things that I forgot to mention. I also can't see the folds from the back, only from the front. They are very high up, almost where her leg joins the rest of her body. (It almost looks like a person of lost a couple of kilograms, a bit of excess skin).

I forgot to mention that my baby also had an ultra-sound when she was 12 weeks old with the specialist to rule out any problems. We did these tests because we were instructed by our pediatrician that this is Hereditary. The specialist, however, did not find any problems. She also, did not have this extra skin fold at that time. It only developed the last couple of months.
