Desperate mom and dad

Hi doctor,

I almost feel bad posting this question, because I' m aware that you get it a lot, but I' m desperate now. My 7 month old son' s nose is VERY blocked. It' s been on and off like that since birth and I' ve always been able to keep it relatively ok with saline drops. However, it' s now so bad that no matter how many times a day I use the saline, he still can' t breath through his nose. It' s to the point where it' s affecting his feeding quite a bit now too. I live in PE and I' ve taken him to a paediatrician in Dr Wicken' s practice (I saw you recommended them to another person once for allergy tests) in case it was an allergy, but after they did bloodtests he told me that all the counts fall within normal range - although they' re at the highest within the normal range. (If that makes sense?) Anyway - that still means there are no allergies. We do have cats and dogs but none of them come near him and only the cats are in the house. (Although nowhere near his room) We also live in a very bushy area and everyone there suffers from hayfever - including us. Even so - if he' s not allergic to anything then surely none of that should be a problem? I bought some Texa syrup from the pharmacy just in case and it did seem to work for a few days but not anymore, so I' ve stopped using it.
He goes to creche and for the first two months he permanently had a cold. He' s fine now, but still has a phlegmy cough and the nose is getting worse. I' ve never given him anything for the cough and try to just to keep the nose clear. The paed also said that the chesty cough is due to a postnasal drip from the stuffy nose.
I don' t want to medicate him unnecessarily, but we are now desperate. He wakes up at least 5 times a night and struggles to fall asleep again as he can' t even suck his dummy due to the blocked nose. I' ve tried the Iliadin drops too but as I can only use it for 5 days, it' s never really had much effect. And even though he' s drinking less milk, he' s still gaining weight. But he' s unhappy everytime he feeds and the nights are getting worse by the day. PLEASE help me. I feel so helpless. What else can I possible do about his nose?? I already have him on reuteri drops.

You have done very well so far in trying to help your baby with his blocked nose. You have listed the symptoms that a young baby has with a blocked nose, especially the feeding and sleeping problems. The cause of your baby's blocked nose is not an allergy and does not appear to be an infection either as it is persistent. I suspect enlarged adenoids is causing this severe nasal obstruction. Your baby should now see an ENT specialist. When there please stress that you have seen no benefit through using all the usual treatments.
