Hello Doc!

My 15 month old started with a husky voice, and dry cough...
Took him to the doctor who obviously diagnosed croup - prescribed pulmicort and duolin to neb with, and betanoid,
flusin C and adco-linctopent.

Now, he prescibed antibiotics aswell, which I said I do not think is needed, as he has no fever and it fine otherwise...

First off I want to know when do I know if it is right to start antibiotics???
And secondly I would like to know if it would be better to substitute the adco-lintopent with alcophylix - as that normally works better for my 3 year old.

Thank you for all your advice!!

A good question which will be helpful to many other parents on this forum.Croup is almost always caused by a virus infection so antibiotics are not required. The best treatment for croup is simply to nebulise your baby with the Pulmicort and Duolin. Betanoid is a powerful and long-acting cortisone and there is no need for this as you are nebulising with Pulmicort [which is a cortisone for nebulising] already.Flusin C contains pseudoephedrine and is not permitted for children under 2 years of age, it also contains a sedating antihistamine.Adco-Linctopent contains orciprenaline which will stimulate your baby and make it difficult for him to sleep. In any case it is used to treat coughing in older children and is not for croup. So all you need to do is to use the Pulmicort and Duolin.Do not give Alcophyllex either.

My son is 7 and has croup. Is it normal for him to have croup at this age? I have nebulized him with Pulmicort and Duolin. Can I still give him Betanoid as well? He is very congested.
