My 7mth old was diagnosed with croup 6 weeks ago. She has been using Prelone, Singulair, Betanoid and Zetofen on instructions of the paed, but she is not getting better. I have taken her to physio 3 times already. She has now lost her appetite. The doctor just says that this disease takes time to go away, but how much longer? Shouldn' t she be using antibiotics? Please advise.

Croup never persists for 6 weeks unless it is the congenital form of croup. She may have a condition called tracheomalacia which is a temporary softening of the cartilage which supports the voice box and the wind pipe or trachea. Please get a second opinion as it is important to make a correct diagnosis. I suggest that your baby sees a paediatric pulmonologist. There are experts in all the main centres in SA.
