Coughing at nite

My 4 year old daughter has got a terrible cough specially at nite. It sounds to me it comes not from the chest but the throat. Little bit flemmy. I took her to the doctor , he said just give ponstan. Please tell me which cough syrup can I buy for her at the chemist ? Dont you think the doctor should have given an Antibiotik before it goes into her chest ?

A persistent night cough in this age group is often due to asthma. Please have her checked by a paediatrician so that a proper diagnosis of her illness can be made. Do not give her a cough mixture as this will only mask her symptoms.

Get her some allecet. Its an antihisthamine that you can give every evening for post nasal drip. Its available over the counter and can be used on a long term basis.
If anyone in the house is smoking, even in the garden, this can be a cause of post nasal drip. Even if they aren''t smoking in the house, their smoke is on their clothes and in their hair.
Vacuum the bedroom really thoroughly two or three times a week to cut down on dust.
Some people believe that cutting milk and dairy out helps with phlegm but personally I don''t find this true and I have read that studies have found it makes no difference.

Antibiotics should only be used if baby has an infection and not as a preventative measure.
