Coughing at night

Hi Doc,

My little girl is 2yrs old. About two weeks ago she had a cold that went stright to pnuemonia (this was her first time) We caught it early and she recovered totally but since the begining of this week every night she has a sneezing and coughing attack. Her cough is a very dry cough and it almost sounds like a bark. But the only times this happens is during the night- otherwise during the day she is prefect. No cough. No Sneezing or running nose nothing. Do you have any suggestions as to what this may be?

Your little girl's cough may be due to a condition called 'tracheitis' which is a viral infection of the trachea or windpipe. The cough can sometimes last for as long as 1 month. The only treatment that seems to help is a short course of a safe short-acting cortisone such as Prelone or Preflam syrup. You will need a doctor's prescription for this medicine.
