Dear Prof

My 3 yrs old son had running nose without fever for a week. He is now coughing non-stop. This is disturbing his sleep. He cries at night beacuse he is tire and want to sleep. I am also very tired as I stay up with him the whole night. I am using sterimar for the running nose. what I can give him for the cough?

Many thanks

Paediatrician

It is difficult to be sure about your son's illness without being able to see him. However your description of his symptoms strongly suggest that he has a persistent nasal allergy problem known as allergic rhinitis. In addition his cough is likely to be due to asthma. He should be seen by a paediatrician with experience in paediatric allergy as soon as possible. Continue to use the Sterimar in his nose while you are waiting for the appointment with the paediatrician to come up.

I gave my 18 month old girl a teaspoon of honey every night before she went to sleep as she was also coughing for a long period during the night. It really worked! She slept through every night without coughing! None of the coughing medicine worked that I got from my pharmacists!
