Good Day doctor

My son has been suffering from the cold /flu for a while but has had a persistant cough throughout. He has been on tamiflu after blood tests showed he had influenze A. and broncho-ped but the cough remains and it has been more than 3 weeks. Sometimes , he cannot sleep because the cough wakes him up.
Is there anything that we can do for him

This persistent cough following a severe upper respiratory viral infection is most likely to be due to an ongoing infection of his trachea called tracheitis. The cough often lasts as long as 6 weeks. Cough mixtures have little effect on this cough which can be very troublesome as you are experiencing with your son. In some cases it is necessary to give a short course of a mild cortisone by mouth such as Prelone syrup for a 5 day course.
