Q.

Constipation in 5 year old

Hi

My daughter suffers from constipation. She does have a bowel movement every day but often complains about an aching tummy.

When i have given her buscopan it has helped. What can i do or give her on a regular basis that will help with this condition?

She''s was on pegicol from about age 2 to age 4. She has not been on it since. What can you recommend?

Thank you

It will help your daughter to give her a safe stool softener medicine. Children usually do well on Duphalac Liquid 10ml once daily. If this has not helped after 1 month stop this treatment.Make sure that she is on a diet with fresh fruit, vegetables, fibre rich foods eg All Bran, Weetbix, wholewheat bread and that she drinks water every day. She must not have more than 2 cups of milk a day and should not eat any hard cheese.

Try a little bit of Prune Juice every morning on empty stomach. You can get it at Pick n Pay where the juice and juice concentrates are. It''s called Safari Prune Juice. Does not taste that nice BUT it helps.

Thank you very much.

I have noticed milk is not good for her. I battle with a fiber breakfast as she''ll only eat Milo cereal (again milk). I encourage veg fruit and water daily. Is yoghurt ok as she has this daily?

Thanks
