constipation in 2 year old

Our son, 2, is suffering from constipation. he passes a stool (about) every 2nd or 3rd day, with a lot of crying and, sometimes help from me (eg. cycling his legs without nappy on, putting vaseline around his anus...trying to encourage him to push). It is then a huge hard lump. I have tried a Lennon' s (?) suppository and it did not help.
He has a redundant colon (discovered with scope when he was baby) and we were told that he must take lots of liquid etc.

He is very stubborn and is refusing to drink more (only takes about one to one and half cup of rooibos with milk per day). I am trying to get him to eat more roughage, which is also not working very well - as his stomach fills, he also eats less...

It is worse than it has generally been for a few months now. What should we do?

As your son has an anatomical problem with his colon which may be responsinble for causing his constipation problem, it would be best for your son to be seen by a paediatric gastroenterologist. You have tried some of the simple measures to relieve his constipation without any success and I am not happy to recommend any specific treatments without an expert opinion. There are paediatric gastroenterologists in all the main centres in SA.
