Q.

constipation

Hi dic. My 2 year old daughter is suffering from constipation. This has been happening for about 2 months now. She was breastfed till 20 months. She''s been on freshmilk since. She is also a very poor eater. For breakfast she has either Cerelac or Nestum cereal. She has yoghurt everyday and fruit. A doctor recommended Lacson which does help her pass stool. But im concerned as to how long is it okay to give her Lacson. Will she become dependant on it. Can you please advise me on what cereal she should be eating that will help her bearing in mind that shes''s not a fan of adult cereals. Also what foods make toddlers constipated? What foods will help her be more regular? What can I give her to boost her apetite or help her put on weight. Please recommend a good multi-vitamen. Plzzzzz help! Thanks in advance.

Of importance is that your daughter has been constipated fairly recently. She was fine while being breastfed. Is she drinking too much milk. She only needs 2 cups a day of milk now.She must not eat any cheese. She should drink lots of water and can have dilute fruit juice once a day.She needs lots of fruit in her diet and this is the best time of the year for fruit. She should also have a fibre rich diet, brown bread and Weetbix. I know that she won't eat adult cereals but try Weetbix. Pour a small amount of hot water over the Weetbix to soften it first and then some milk and a little sugar. If she does need a stool softener you can give her a 2 week course of Duphalac Liquid 5ml twice day for 14 days.

I give my 18 month old girl prune juice (from purity) when constipation is bad - it helps in an hour or two.
Regular fruit juice (every second day) 2 cups of milk and rooibostee keeps her regular.
